Mosquito facts
In Massachusetts, the EEE virus is most often identified in mosquitoes found in and around freshwater, hardwood and swamps. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite infected birds. Although humans and several other types of mammals, particularly horses and llamas, can become infected, they do not spread disease.
Tick Facts
- Ticks live in shady, damp, wooded areas including shrubs and gardens. Ticks attach to people, pets, and other animals that rub up against them. Nymph stage ticks are found mostly at ground level. Adult stage ticks can be found up to a couple of feet off the ground on the vegetation.
Bite Prevention
- Wear light colored clothing to more easily spot ticks. Check yourself and your animals after coming inside. Use of repellents that contain DEET may be used on the skin and those containing Permethrin may be used on clothing only.
